I did the Inka Trail in Sept 14 with my husband. This was the first part of our Honeymoon! We chose the 4 days/3 nights package. Best Honeymoon we could ask for. From the time you get on the bus from Cuzco to Piskacucho, where you have your first breakfast, until you arrive to Machu Picchu is something that your memory will never forget. Everything you see, you smell, you experience is breathtaking, is emotional and will put your mind at peace.
Machu Picchu is of course the final destination. From sleeping in tents, to meeting people, to the porters, the guides, the cook..... and the achievement of every pass along the way (First Pass - dead Woman's pass, 4200 M / 2nd pass - Runkuracay, 4000 M / and 3rd pass - Phuyupatamarca, 3690 M), to the arrival to Machu Picchu, all a bunch of experiences, memories, tears.
We were a bit unlucky when we arrived to Machu Picchu, the entire trek was sun but a lot of rain, but somehow still you do not care about the rain ,make sure you have a poncho and good hiking boots! Along the way you have some "Inka Toilets" as people like to call them. They are....interesting. You can not put toilet paper in it, so make sure you have a bag with you at all times:) They are not very clean either (imagine how many people use them on a daily basis, and they are at 4000M of altitude!). There are not many places either if you prefer nature:) Alpaca, our trekking company had a portable toilet. They are not great, but sure, they do the trick. Advice (never ever go after the big guy!) from experience:).
On the day of our arrival to Machu Picchu, unfortunately a big cloud was where Machu Picchu is supposed to be, thankfully started to open a bit and in between clouds we could see Machu Picchu, also Huayna Picchu. We were supposed to also trek Huayna Picchu, however due to weather conditions was not advisable. I would also say if you are afraid of heights, Huayna Picchu must not be the best place to do it. I found out I was not very good at heights on the 2nd day once we were descending and it felt I was going down a ladder with nothing to hold onto! My tip was to have my husband walking in front of me, so I could not see the bottom of the mountain:) All and all, best experience of my life, and I had travelled quite a bit.
You can also go for the day to Machu Picchu, but if your body can take the 4 day trek, no doubt this is the way to see Machu Picchu. If you doing the trek, you will have a company that you booked the trek with, as it is the only way to do the trek (with guides and porters). Make sure you value porters, cook and guides properly, without them this would not be possible.
